Argentina's 2026 Pre-Match Shirt: A Sunburst Built for the Tunnel, Not the Pitch

The shirt Argentina's squad warms up in at the 2026 World Cup is not the match kit: it is an Adidas sunburst built from the Sol de Mayo, praised for its ambition and mocked for its execution.

Argentina's 2026 World Cup pre-match shirt swaps the familiar sky-blue-and-white bands for something busier: a sunburst pattern radiating out from the upper chest in alternating stripes of sky blue, white, and navy, an optical effect Adidas built as a nod to the Sol de Mayo, the sun on Argentina's national flag. The Adidas mark and the AFA crest are rendered in metallic gold instead of the usual white, set against a solid navy crew-neck collar and navy sleeve blocks, with "Argentina" stitched down the left sleeve in the same gold.

The iconic Albiceleste stripes are there, but they don't look -- or feel -- right.ESPN

Adidas also built a Messi-specific version of the pre-match shirt, the first time the brand has put his own branding on an Argentina kit. It keeps the same light-blue-and-white sunburst across the chest but adds a detail of its own: a gold Sol de Mayo graphic on the upper back, just below the neck, housing Messi's number 10. It is one of three separate pre-match jerseys Adidas produced for Argentina's 2026 campaign.

Adidas rounded out Argentina's off-pitch 2026 World Cup lineup with an Originals anthem jacket: black, Trefoil-branded, retro detailing, a $119.99 price tag, and stock down to single digits at one retailer by final week. None of this is matchday kit. It's the layer Argentina wears before kickoff, in the tunnel and on the training ground, sunburst, gold thread, and all.
