Spain's 2026 Away Kit: A Manuscript in Cream and Gold
Adidas built Spain's alternate World Cup shirt out of the illuminated manuscripts of its own language, and it got its biggest stage yet on the night that ended Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career.
Spain's 2026 World Cup away shirt is built around a story, not a slogan. Adidas set it on an off-white base, the color of a page, and printed it with an all-over pyrite-toned pattern lifted from the illustrations and graphic flourishes of classic Spanish books and manuscripts. Gold and burgundy trim the sleeves and collar, and the back of the neck carries "ESPAÑA," complete with its Ñ: a small typographic detail standing in for the whole idea, that this shirt is a piece of the language before it is a piece of kit.
It also marks a comeback. The shirt returns Adidas' vintage Trefoil logo to a men's World Cup shirt for the first time since Italia '90, 36 years, placed on the right chest as part of a wider away collection the brand built around that 1990s era. Spain is one of the national teams wearing it.

Spain carried the shirt's home counterpart through a Group H campaign that opened cautiously: a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde on June 15, then a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia on June 21 in which 18-year-old Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the 10th minute. A 1-0 win over Uruguay on June 26, scored by Alex Baena, sealed top spot in the group with seven points from two wins and a draw.
FIFA redesigned the tournament's sleeve badges for 2026, and Spain's shirts carry two layers of history because of it. The former champions at this World Cup, Spain among them alongside Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, England, and Uruguay, wear an exclusive gold-colorway version of the tournament badge on the right sleeve instead of the standard design every other team wears. That is separate from the FIFA World Champions badge, a gold shield reading "FIFA WORLD CHAMPIONS" with the year, which only the reigning champion wears on the chest; Argentina has carried it since winning in 2022 and keeps it through the 2026 final under FIFA's rules.
The tournament also introduced sleeve patches for individual players. A gold-trimmed "FIFA World Cup Debut" badge, showing the trophy alongside the words, goes on the right sleeve of anyone playing their first World Cup; Lamine Yamal is one of the named examples. Yamal wears the number 19 at this World Cup, the same number Lionel Messi wore at his own World Cup debut in 2006. Messi, at his sixth World Cup, is himself an example FIFA cites for the separate "World Cup Legends" patch reserved for players in their fifth tournament or beyond, alongside veterans like Cristiano Ronaldo and Manuel Neuer.
The final is played today, July 19, at MetLife Stadium, Spain against Argentina. FIFA found enough contrast between Spain's red home shirt and Argentina's light-blue-and-white stripes that neither side has to switch strips: Spain wears red, Argentina wears its familiar home colors. The manuscript-patterned away shirt has already had its moment on the game's biggest stage, worn once, against a fellow European giant, in the match that closed out one of the sport's great World Cup careers. Whatever happens today, that shirt's story is already written.
